Only Voice Remains

(2019)

40 MIN| DOCUMENTARY

DIRECTOR: MAKEZ RIKWEDA

Only Voice Remains tells the story of Iranian poet Forugh Farrokhzad whose sexually charged and confessional poetry broke thousands of years of tradition to give women a voice for the first time. In her tragically short life she overcame sexism, slut-shaming, a mental breakdown and a scandalous love affair to become one of the greatest artists of her generation.

This experimental hybrid film fuses together documentary interviews (including with her artistic collaborator and former lover, Ebrahim Golestan) with dramatic recreations of an actress playing Forugh and stylistic sequences of her poetry to creatively explore Forugh's legacy to a new generation of women looking to use their voice.

The project was developed as part of the Sheffield Documentary Film Festival/Creative England/BFI funded 'Doc/Next' programme.

Set for festival release in 2019.
